Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.
The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge certain decisions from the official, following the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific decisions, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
